Fairbanks & Cole "Expert" 5-string banjo S/N 8600, Circa 1888
This high-grade banjo was made by Fairbanks & Cole shortly before they split up and formed their own companies. It was made at a time when saw-cut inlay artistry was at its peak and before engraved inlays became the norm on high-grade banjos. When I got it, though, all but four of the inlays had previously fallen out, so I sent it to Bob Anderson and he faithfully restored it to its previous glory. Thanks Bob!
